Tomorrow 5 May is the WHO – SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands Day!

On the World Hand Hygiene Day (5 May) we must reflect on the value of infection prevention and control as key elements to guarantee the highest standards for hygiene and patient safety! Simply and cost-effective measures save lives!

To call for safer and smarter healthcare systems in the EU, Health First Europe has launched the online PETITION #Declaration4PatientSafety. We believe Ministers of Health need to agree on a high level of understanding on patient safety practices and standards to provide sustainable and safe healthcare to their citizens. We call upon health authorities, policymakers, healthcare professionals, providers and patients to join hands to prevent unnecessary harms in healthcare by promoting safer health systems across Europe.

European and national policymakers must act now to adopt and implement effective measures to stop preventable harm and guarantee a safer healthcare for everyone.

Facebook: Adverse events, such as healthcare-associated infections or surgical errors, occurred in 4 – 17 % of hospitalisations in Europe. Most of incidents occurred in hospitals are preventable. The EU Member States must protect patients from preventable harm: patient safety is milestone of quality and safety within healthcare, the absolute precondition for preventing errors and adverse events. For this reason, I endorse the #Declaration4PatientSafety. SIGN the PETITION & act now for a safer healthcare across EU! https://goo.gl/ERtxT8

Patient harm is the 14th leading cause of the global disease burden, a threat to human health alike tuberculosis and malaria. On any given day 1 in 18 patients in European hospitals have at least one healthcare-associated infection. Every year an estimated 4.1 million patients acquire a healthcare-associated infection in the EU, and at least 37.000 die as a result. Those harms are preventable!

Effective patient safety strategies could prevent more than 750.000 harminflicting medical errors per year in the European Union alone!
